🦟 What Is Jigger Digging?

Jigger digging refers to the manual removal of Tunga penetrans—commonly known as jiggers or sand fleas—from the skin of an infected person. These tiny parasitic insects burrow into the skin, typically in the feet or hands, causing painful swelling, itching, and serious health complications if left untreated.

🧬 The Parasite: Tunga penetrans

  • Jiggers are microscopic fleas found in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in impoverished communities with sandy soil.
  • Only female jiggers burrow into the skin. Once embedded, they feed on blood and lay eggs, causing a growing lesion that resembles a black dot surrounded by swelling.
  • The flea’s abdomen expands dramatically, forming a painful bump. Eventually, she dies inside the host, leaving behind eggs that hatch and continue the cycle.

🩺 What Is Jigger Digging?

  • Jigger digging is the physical extraction of the embedded flea using sharp tools like needles, thorns, or safety pins.
  • In many rural areas, this is done without anesthesia or sterile equipment, increasing the risk of secondary infections, tetanus, or even amputation.
  • The process involves locating the flea, carefully cutting around the lesion, and pulling out the parasite without rupturing it—because if parts are left behind, the infection worsens.

⚠️ Health Risks

  • Untreated jigger infestations can lead to:
    • Severe pain and immobility
    • Open wounds and bacterial infections
    • Social stigma and isolation
    • Permanent disability or loss of limbs

Children are especially vulnerable, often missing school or being ostracized due to visible infestations.

🧼 Safer Alternatives

Modern medical approaches recommend:

  • Sterile removal by trained professionals
  • Antibiotics to prevent infection
  • Footwear and hygiene education to prevent reinfestation
  • Community outreach programs to treat and educate affected populations

Organizations like Kinship United and local health initiatives in Kenya and Uganda have been instrumental in providing emergency care and awareness.
